Risa Kusumoto is a visual artist and storyteller based in Berlin. Whether beginning with text, an image, or something more abstract, she observes from multiple angles, absorbs details, and slowly discovers the narrative underneath.
Born in Japan and raised in Brazil, the United States, Germany, and Canada, she relied heavily on visual communication throughout her childhood as a way to cope with the constantly changing languages around her. She was quiet, rarely said anything outside, but tried intensely to make sense of what was happening through drawing.
Today, she continues to explore the many ways we can enjoy and make sense of our complex world.

I’m here most of the time.
I like using many different types of art supplies, but my favourite is the sumi ink and Japanese calligraphy brushes that I inherited from my late grandmother.
She was a master calligrapher! I’m not a calligrapher myself, but I aspire to draw lines as playful as hers one day.
Dear Educators and Librarians,
Sharing stories with children (and adults too!) is one of my greatest joys. I love creating warm, engaging moments where books spark curiosity and imagination.
If you are interested in inviting me for an in-person or virtual visit—whether for readings, signings, or speaking engagements—I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me directly at contact@risakusumoto.com , and we can tailor the visit to suit your group.
A travel stipend is required for visits outside of Berlin.
